6th Sense influence the UNCRPD

6th Sense influence the UNCRPD

January 2014

Members of 6th Sense met with Bronagh Byrne, Rebecca Alison and Shea Irvine from Queens University to talk about how important the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is to them and other young people with disabilities.

Queens will be writing a report on their findings after they meet with more young people.  The report will be given to the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland who will tell the UNCRPD if the rights of young people with disabilities are being met.

The young people from 6th Sense talked about issues that are important to them, such as

  • Having the opportunity to have their voice heard
  • Having a job
  • Independent living
  • People’s attitudes to young people with disabilities

The young people enjoyed the evening and high-lighted the role groups like 6th Sense could have in making sure young people with disabilities have a say in things that are important to them.

6th sense will be invited to the launch of the report when it is published.
